Thank you for visiting Xythos (booth #833) at EDUCAUSE 2008. Whether you visited us at the Solution Expo, grabbed an ever-popular Xythos t-shirt, or attended our joint session with Abilene Christian University, we appreciate you taking the time to discuss your goals and strategies with us.
My head is still spinning from the wealth of information presented at EDUCAUSE Annual 2008 but I’ll make an attempt to distill it into three main objectives that I learned from speaking with attendees and visitors to the Xythos booth:
- CIOs are tasked with making the business of their university more efficient. They need to streamline operations and provide tangible cost savings for the hundreds of business processes which rely on the secure management of content.
- IT Execs need to find the most expedient and secure means by which they can facilitate and maintain research projects and the grant funds these projects provide to the university. Often, these research-related processes contribute significant income to institutions but do not receive the same level of attention applied to managing learning content.
- Providing safe and secure file sharing for students, faculty and university knowledge workers is still on everyone’s mind. IT Execs want to provide comprehensive and secure web storage services, while maintaining the flexiblity and and control of LAN file servers. Google Docs isn't always the answer for vital, institutional content.
Here’s one that's no surprise - CIOs are being challenged to use their existing infrastructure to accomplish these objectives at minimal/no cost during these tough economic times.

I wish I was in college again! Case in point... Abilene Christian University, as part of their Connect Mobile Learning program, is providing all incoming freshman with either an iPhone or iPod to receive alerts, collaborate with their professors and know up-to-the minute class assignment info. The media has taken notice of their achievements and summary of article's about the initiative can be found here.

Another noteworthy feature of My Mobile: students and faculty members can access shared drives via iPhone. Powered and secured by document management and collaboration firm Xythos, the Files section of My Mobile gives each student and faculty member access to personal drives. Here they can store various class files, as well as course-specific folders for dropping off and picking up assignments or revisions. CIO.com, October 3, 2008
