INDIANA STATE DEPLOYS XYTHOS AS PART OF ITS BLUEPRINT FOR CHANGE
Open Standards-Based Platform Supports New Laptop Initiative
Boston, MA – August 2, 2006— At the Summer 2006 Campus Technology Conference, Xythos Software, a leading developer of Basic Content Services solutions, announced that Indiana State University (ISU) has begun to deploy Xythos’ Digital Locker Suite as part of ISU’s Laptop University program. That program, the first of its kind at a public institution in Indiana, calls for all faculty and students to use laptop computers. Beginning with the fall 2007 freshmen class, all ISU students will be required to have laptops. In addition, approximately 700 high-achieving students with grade point averages of 3.0, or higher will get a jumpstart on the program later this month after receiving complimentary laptops from the university for their performance. To support this program, Indiana State University selected Xythos because its technology will help facilitate secure and universal access to institutional content, while promoting collaboration among its faculty, staff and students wherever they use their laptops.
Indiana State University, a publicly-assisted institution of higher learning, provides an educational environment that fosters holistic student growth and development. Acknowledged as one of Indiana’s most progressive public universities, ISU provides innovative instruction, research and public service, while fostering partnerships within the business community. Initially founded as a school for the preparation of teachers in 1865, ISU now offers more than 100 majors ranging from criminology and psychology to aviation flight technology and business.
Driven by visionaries in the Colleges of Business and Education and with an emphasis on the critical impact of cross-departmental teams, Laptop University was established. To support this forward-looking initiative, ISU’s Office of Information Technology decided upon a web-centric solution – one that would also enable it to respond to compliance requirements and address the need for better protecting its institutional content. After researching traditional ECM applications, open source projects, customized file systems and basic content services, ISU selected the Xythos Digital Locker Suite. The Xythos web-based content management system provides a complete set of document and file management capabilities that enable administrators, faculty and students to easily manage and share files whether from a coffee shop in Terre Haute or attending a conference in Boston. “As a progressive institution of learning, Indiana State University wanted a solution that could support the collaborative learning process beyond the classroom and even our own campus, yet still be familiar and easy to use for our faculty and students.,” stated Bob Jefferson, Executive Director of Information Technology at ISU. “ In selecting Xythos we found a solution which helps address our content storage, sharing and security requirements all together,” he observed.
“We appreciate that Indiana State University is committed to providing tomorrow's leaders with valuable hands-on research, lab and field experiences – and we’re proud to help support and protect that process,” stated Ed Miller, CEO of Xythos. “ISU has joined a rapidly growing group of institutions that are leveraging web services- based technology like ours to improve the learning process and better prepare their students for the workplace of the future,” he remarked.
