More Linux Developers Choose Xythos for Improved Content Security

Open standards-based solution facilitates rapid application development and integration

August 08, 2005

San Francisco, CA – August 8, 2005 - Xythos Software, the leading developer of basic document and file management software, today announced increased adoption of its open standards-based products, including the Xythos WebFile Server and Enterprise Document Manager, within its customers’ Linux environments. With two million licensed users, the company attributes the reduced cost of development and integration, combined with improved content security as primary factors contributing to the selection of its products by organizations using Linux.

Linux’ growing popularity for enterprise file services and applications highlights its suitability for Xythos’ web-based content management platform. Xythos customers benefit from the increased flexibility achieved by deploying the company’s products in Linux environments, helping them to address the reliability and scalability challenges typical of large-scale enterprise deployments. Recent Xythos and Linux deployments such as the Cross Domain Collaborative Information Environment (CDCIE), developed by the U.S. Joint Forces Command, illustrate the benefits provided by open standards-based technology: Linux ensures cross-platform compatibility while Xythos’ Java support simplifies application and portal integration. Complete WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) compatibility also allows approximately 5,000 military personnel to securely read and write documents over the web, accelerating critical information sharing.

“Linux has proven to be a reliable and scalable platform for both Xythos and its customers,” stated Ed Miller, CEO of Xythos. “Using Linux and Xythos together represents a prime example of the benefits organizations can achieve from the combination of open source and open standards-based technologies”, he added.

Xythos’ Linux deployments are also growing within both academic and research communities. At the University of California, Irvine (UCI), Xythos and Linux have been combined to help protect the school’s valuable institutional content while making it easier for faculty members and staff to collaborate and share information both on and off campus. “For us, it's all about secure collaboration. Faculty rarely conduct research on their own. We consider WebFiles (UCI’s Xythos-based system) to be a key service that we offer to researchers and staff at the University of California, Irvine. We were able to make the service available to 12,000 faculty, staff and graduate students using out-of-the-box functionality. We rely on WebFiles to preserve and protect our valuable research, enabling us to securely share the fruits of our endeavors with peers at UCI and collaborators worldwide," stated E. Scott Menter, Director of Infrastructure Services for Network and Academic Computing Services at UCI.

The Air Force Research Lab at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base has deployed Xythos to support cross-organization document collaboration requirements for programs such as “Targets under Trees” and “The Exploitation of 3-D Data”. This research required lab personnel to be able to securely exchange research data over the web using a variety of different client systems. Research participants included Army, Air Force and Marine personnel, as well as employees at national labs and private consulting organizations. Support for OpenLDAP authentication, encrypted sessions and file-level access control were a ‘must have’ for this diverse community.

Xythos will be demonstrating the latest features of its recently released WebFile Server 5.0 and Enterprise Document Manager 5.0 products at Booth #460 at Linux World San Francisco from August 8-11, 2005.
