NEW YORK CITY HEALTH AND HOSPITALS CORPORATION SELECTS XYTHOS TO PROVIDE SECURE DOCUMENT REPOSITORY

Corporation Expedites Employee Background Checks with FBI and DCJS

April 12, 2005

San Francisco, CA, April 12, 2005 - Xythos Software, the leading developer of simple document and file management software, today announced that New York City Health and Hospital Corporation, the largest municipal health care agency in the US, has selected Xythos WebFile Server (WFS) to provide secure web-based file management. New York City Health and Hospital Corporation (HHC) will rely on WFS to handle personnel files, work-related collaboration and file storage, while also providing HHC employees with the ability to store classified information securely and to then distribute that information with confidence.

A 4.3 billion public benefit corporation that operates 11 acute care public hospitals, 6 diagnostic and treatment centers, 4 long term nursing care facilities and over 100 community healthcare clinics throughout New York City, HHC ranks nationally in the top 10% of healthcare institutions in the implementation of medical technology. HHC services 1.3 million or one out of every six New Yorkers and its medical professionals draw on the expertise of faculty and researchers at partners including Columbia University, Health Sciences, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Each year, HHC receives 9,000 applications to fill its open positions. As part of the information required for prospective employees, HHC conducts criminal background investigations, including fingerprint checking, in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS.) Historically, HHC employees had to personally travel to the various city divisions to begin the fingerprinting and background investigation process. The results were then processed through DCJS and sent to HHC, with the entire process averaging ten weeks and often resulting in delayed hiring. In a highly competitive hiring environment, this contributed to doctors, nurses and technicians accepting employment opportunities outside of HHC.

A.J. Dandrea is a Senior Director of Corporate Support Services for HHC, responsible for an Intranet that supports 40,000 people across the company’s 20+ locations. Protecting confidential and sensitive information, authenticating user log-ins and controlling data access were critical to Dandrea in selecting a secure, web-based file management system. With WFS installed, HHC was able to receive and exchange information electronically with the FBI and DCJS, significantly helping the organization overcome the hurdles it had faced previously in its hiring practices. “We took a paper-based ten week process, converted it to a more secure electronic system and reduced the timeframe to less than one week – and sometimes as little as 24-48 hours. We also reduced administrative costs related to hiring employees overall while allowing the hospital system to remain more competitive,” stated Dandrea.

“We are pleased to provide the type of secure information-sharing capabilities that can assist HHC in addressing its document collaboration requirements,” said Ed Miller, CEO of Xythos Software. “HHC’s selection of Xythos also illustrates the advantages that open standards-based technology can provide when integrated with other applications, such as the hospital’s document imaging service.”

The integration of Xythos technology within HHC is helping to improve the collaborative efforts of users within its many operating groups, providing enhanced ease of use, reliability and scalability. Xythos’ open standards-based architecture is consistent with HHC’s efforts to maintain a 100% web-enabled solution, compatible with any operating environment. With Human Resources personnel concurrently looking at sensitive information, HHC requires highly reliable, secure collaboration tools that enable that kind of communication. Xythos technology, combined with other HHC applications, permits employees to safely access and share the information they need from within a common environment using virtually any web-enabled device.
