Surgical planning lab at major academic medical center uses Xythos WebDav solution to improve content security and compliance
WebFile Server Replaces FTP and Email Attachments
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, August 25, 2003 - Xythos Software, the leading developer of Internet file management software, today announced that the Surgical Planning Lab (SPL) at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, MA has successfully implemented the Xythos WebFile Server (WFS) to simplify how doctors and clinicians review and exchange files while protecting confidential medical data throughout the collaborative process. As a result, Xythos is helping the SPL quickly achieve cost-effective compliance with federal and institutional privacy, confidentiality, and data-sharing rules while actually improving the convenience by which users can exchange files.
"We needed to protect and track patient data that was created and shared by our employees and research partners," explains Michael Halle, Ph.D., Director of Technology Development at the SPL. "Xythos allowed us to make key changes in our infrastructure - such as replacing FTP and reducing the number of email attachments - which has helped us better respond to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements. As a bonus, novice and experienced users alike find Xythos easier to use than less secure file sharing solutions."
Clinical and research collaborators within the departments of Radiology and Neurosurgery at Brigham & Women's Hospital are among the first to benefit from the SPL's Xythos implementation. Xythos is regularly used by hospital employees and collaborators worldwide to provide secure and controlled access to information including collections of large medical image files, imaging and visualization software packages and grant documents.
According to industry reports, IT managers today are challenged to comply with privacy requirements as they relate to common, or unstructured file information typically not stored in databases. "Delivering secure file management solutions is our business," explains Edward Miller, CEO of Xythos. "Our WebDAV standard products provide the advanced access control, auditing and encryption features needed to comply with regulations such as HIPAA."
Xythos is also making available new resources to assist organizations seeking to improve their compliance capabilities. In addition to a forthcoming case study reviewing the Surgical Planning Lab's Xythos implementation, the Company has released a new white paper, "Internet File Management and HIPAA - A Practical Approach towards Responding to the Privacy Regulation of the Act." This paper documents how Internet standards including WebDAV, SSL and HTTP can be used to provide a successful foundation for compliance solutions. Both of these documents will be available at www.xythos.com.
