Xythos Software WebFile Server 3 - Improved
eWeek
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., June 11, 2001 - Xythos continues its mission to provide universal file access from any device on the Internet by launching WebFile Server (WFS) version 3. WFS aims to "Webify" enterprise data and provide universal access to files through WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning). WFS is designed as a transparent file-management layer for file servers and network storage with metadata search mechanisms, file-locking measures to prevent overwrites, and document versioning. It includes a facility to set and maintain directory quotas and provides log-writing capabilities that track read, write, copy and move actions on stored information. Default user authentication is based on passwords and cookies, but PKI (public key infrastructure) digital certificates and LDAP solutions will apply. WFS also supports SSL (Secure Socket Layer) to encrypt communications. Because any device on the Internet with a Web browser, including WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) phones and PDAs (personal digital assistants), can access WFS, enterprises and service providers can run public Web sites with private data stores.
